Check out the best moments from the last workshop that Artist as Family did at home before starting their adventure in Asia.
A few months have passed since this experience, but I did not want to miss the opportunity to share the best moments and invite you to get to know Artist as Family, a gorgeous permaculture family that have a lot of educational material on socials about ethical living.
The day started with a fire, in the sacred land of Dja Dja Wurrung people, acknowledgement was honoured and we unleash 29 soul stories in a cozy circle part of the school forest and community rituals happens. I loved the silence, the warmth of the fire and the intimacy of the space.
Also I had the best fruit bread, and I think ,I do know, about fruit bread, hahaha.
The Re-treat
I participated in this 2 days workshop about "Permaculture subsistence in the suburbs and beyond, a weekend course in Daylesford". But was more than a course, was a retreat. Hyperlocal food, grown, harvested, preserved for them and local small-ethical businesses.
In this event another 28 humans, participated and we all have time to talk about our life stories and journey trough permaculture. People from Geelong, Gippsland, Easter and western suburbs and countryside, even a family from Brisbane came just for this re-treat weekend.
All the information of years of learning for Artist as Family, was available, for us, with extended arms, eye contact and a kind smile.
We got to know about how to build sense of community, natural-home based medicine, local businesses, growing your own food, managing your own compost, manage your our local energy, forest and bush school, women and man circles.
I could understand, achieve community sufficiency is possible, already exist, but dependes on community, wich is the opposite of individualism, that's the challenge in the city that I can fill in suburbs.
I want to remember those days as full of magic, with nourishing food, nourishing wisdom from the country. Like this picture where Woody is setting the candles for the special dinner.
After this profound feeling of honouring our animal nature and embracing zero waste systems and the gift economy, my next critical thought is how much of this kind of governance and structures can I adapt to my current status as "international student-migrant-city-beach based-artist" kind of citizen.
Sacred Dinner
At night we had an amazing dinner, Kangoroo that was hitten by a car and WildLife Victoria has to kill, was offered to them, they prey to his soul and respectfully slaughter the animal and cook it for us. The meat was macerated in honey garlic, fermented by Meg, and then roasted. We had it, with rice, greens from the garden and beans stew, a selection of dry beans from summer. Everything was extremely tasty.
We had dinner with special guest: David Holmgren and Sue Dennet both strong spirits, legends of permaculture and was an honour to share a meal listening their stories about community, about the world and their expectations.
Also we had dinner with awesome influencers and change makers, the fantastic couple: Jordan Osman from Happen Films, and Catie Payne from Reskillience Podcast. Of course, they told us their love story and other stories about change makers, we laugh a lot around the fire. Please check their platforms!
I brought my personal journal, because I wanted to take all the notes I could!.
One of the best quotes I highlight came from Patrick, he said: "Life is a fermentation process". I guess the continuation is, just gets better and better, haha.
The best of those experiences was the feeling of finding our tribe, sense of belonging, justice and ethics, is something we are not used to. I reconnected with all of them again, outside of my bubble, with people I knew, but also with strangers. And it feels safe, warm, comfortable, just. I hope the entire wold can feel like that.
Food from the soil, harvested, fermented, baked, cooked, with love in every step, menu explained and served with a big smile and a kind look in the eyes.
This was an experience of deep community care.
Tell me in the comments, What experiences -at home- work- in your community- make you feel this way?
-I hope lots, if not is time for a change.
That weekend was a treat for the soul, and for more activism, I am developing a new project and I cant wait to write about it!
See you in the next post!
-Lots of love,
